The University School instructors hold advanced academic degrees and are licensed by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Our faculty works closely with the students to ensure that learning is an enjoyable and rewarding experience and that success is achieved.

Mrs. Melissa Bernstein
Mrs. Melissa Bernstein holds a Bachelors Degree in Art Education and a Masters Degree in Special Education. As a transplanted New Yorker, she has taught in both New York and Pennsylvania and with students from the 1st through 12th grades. Her specialties are drawing and painting, but she likes to experiment and create in many other mediums. She loves to present students with new and unusual projects that challenge them to explore their own creativity and unique abilities. She has also worked in interior design and as an invitation and event designer. She has lived in the Pittsburgh area with her husband and two children for over 28 years. She enjoys taking long walks with her two dogs and spending time with family and friends, traveling to artist communities around the country, gardening, antiquing, cooking, and sharing her love of the arts.
Ms. Linda Boyer
Spanish Instructor and ESL
Linda Boyer is the Spanish Instructor at The University School. She comes to our school with many years of teaching experience in both Spanish and English as a Second Language. She graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor’s of Science degree and Master’s of Education. Later, Ms. Boyer completed her English as a Second Language Certificate. She began her teaching career as a teacher of Spanish in the Pittsburgh Public Schools and later became part of the ESL Department in Pittsburgh Public Schools. During that time, she taught students from all over the world, including a group of refugee students from Somalia. Along with teaching, she participated in co-authoring a book with her supervisor at PPS, professors from The University of Pittsburgh and Indiana University, “How to Implement an Elementary Foreign Language Program.” Ms. Boyer worked at Winchester Thurston as a private tutor in English, for the International families. Although she is not a native of Pittsburgh, she has lived here most of her life. Ms. Boyer’s interests outside of school are her five grandchildren, spending time with her family, volunteering as a personal care companion for an Alzheimer’s patient and also her two dogs. Ms. Crystal Calderwood
English and ESL Instructor
Ms. Crystalee Calderwood received her Bachelor of Arts in English from Penn State University and her Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from Chatham University, with a dual emphasis in Poetry and Writing for Children and Adolescents. Her passions are (in no particular order): young adult novels, modern American poets, early childhood literacy, and teaching English as a Second Language. She discovered her love for teaching through her service with AmeriCorps, where she worked with a number of underserved populations, including urban youth, refugees, and immigrants. Mr. Garrett Graff
Mr. Garrett Graff graduated from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education Social Studies and a Bachelor of Arts in History in 2012. He worked as a tutor, a graduate admissions advisor, and a substitute teacher prior to joining The University School. Mr. Graff volunteered as a History Department Mentor, a program established at Edinboro to help transition incoming freshman to the world of higher education. Additionally, he was honored by receiving the William Porter Award in 2012 for excellence in the field of History, and the 2012 Edinboro University Social Studies Student Teacher of the Year Award. Mr. Graff believes in the necessity of a thorough education, and is dedicated to bettering students’ writing, reading, public speaking, and critical thinking skills. Mr. John Hanau
Social Science Instructor
Mr. John Hanau has over 25 years teaching experience at the high school level. Mr. Hanau holds a Pennsylvania Department of Education certification in Secondary Social Studies. Mr. Robert Jakicic
Mathematics and Sciences Instructor
Mr. Robert Jakicic joined The University School in 2014 after graduating from Duquesne University with a Bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education of Mathematics. Mr. Jakicic teaches Geometry, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, and Biology. He also supports The Univeristy School Arts education program and physical education. Dr. Taylour Kimmel
Dr. Taylour Kimmel received her Bachelor of Science in Psychology at the University of Pittsburgh in 2012 and recently completed her Doctor of Psychology in School Psychology at Duquesne University. Dr. Kimmel has extensive experience working with children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and their families. Additionally, she has worked in various school settings helping students succeed academically, socially, behaviorally, and emotionally. Her role at The University School will be to support students by providing individual and group counseling as well as consulting with faculty and families to assist students in reaching their full potential. Dr. Kimmel enjoys music, spending time with family and friends (her boston terrier included), and traveling. She is excited to be a part of The University School team. Ms. A. Jean Linder
English and Writing Instructor
Ms. A. Jean Linder received her Bachelor of Arts in English with a minor in Creative Writing and Theatre from Chatham University in 2000. She completed her Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing with a focus in Children’s and Young Adult Literature in 2008. She joined The University School faculty in 2008. Ms. Francine Liscotti
Director of Administration and Admissions
Ms. Francine Liscotti is the Director of Administration and Admissions for The University School. Ms. Liscotti has worked at The University School for 19 years. She holds an Associate degree in Administration from The University of Pittsburgh. Mrs. Nicole Lockerman
Mrs. Nicole Lockerman is the Education Director for The University School. Mrs. Lockerman completed her Master in the Art of Teaching at Chatham University and holds a Pennsylvania Department of Education certification in Secondary Language Arts. Mrs. Lockerman completed her Bachelor of Arts in English and Literature with a concentration in Creative and Professional Writing at Mercyhurst University. Mrs. Lockerman has worked with adolescents and young adults pursuing higher education for the past 10 years. She served as the Director of AHEADD (Achieving in Higher Education), as well as the Director of Transition and Higher Education Services for AERI Behavioral Health in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Mrs. Lockerman co-developed one of the first college acclimation programs in the United States and London, England. Mrs. Lockerman resides in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with her family. Mr. Mark Paull
Mr. Mark Paull has provided Math education to students attending The University School since 1992. Mr. Paull received a Bachelor of Science degree from Carnegie Mellon University for Information & Decision Systems and Industrial Management. He completed his Masters in Education at The University Pittsburgh and holds Secondary Math Instructional I and II certifications from the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Mr. Paull offers math instruction to the community and SAT/ACT preparation. Previously, he was the Head Varsity Girls’ Tennis coach at Oakland Catholic High School and currently serves as the Youth Tennis Tournament Director and Coach for Pittsburgh Citiparks at Mellon Park Tennis Center and Frick Clay Court Tennis Club. Mr. Delwyn Peterson
Mr. Delwyn Peterson joined The University School staff with nearly forty-five years of educational experience. He is certified in chemistry physics, biology, and physical science. In addition, he is a certified school administrator with experience ranging from elementary principal to superintendent of schools. He received his B. S. degree from California University of Pennsylvania; his Masters from Duquesne University and his superintendent’s letter from St. Bonaventure University. He also is ABD from Vanderbilt University. His career experiences outside of academia includes paramedics, cardiac monitor technician and hazardous material training. Outside of school, his hobbies include amateur radio (W3DTP), photography and playing with his dogs. He is presently working to train his lab to be certified by Therapy Dog International, which he has done before with a previous dog. He views The University school as an outstanding educational resource for parents and students of all educational backgrounds and feels it is one of the few school which permits student to grow to their full potential. Ms. Jeanette Trok
Special Education Instructor and College Counselor
Ms. Jeanette Trok recieved her Bachelor of Sciences in Elementary and Special Education (K-12) from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. After graduating in 2012, she worked as as a special education teacher at Propel Pitcarin. In 2015, Ms. Trok joined the University School staff and supports students who have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or Education Plan. Ms. Trok is The University School’s college counselor. She enjoys walking her dog, everything food-related and spending time with family and friends. She is looking forward to more years at The University School.
